Our Winter Archival Projects

Our Winter Archival Projects

Over the last few months we have been busy working with a local council and the Department of Environment on some important archival projects. A Letter from The King The City of Mitcham Historical Department had come into possession of some very old and important photos and documents from the early 1900s. The material was in quite good condition although very fragile, and we only had a short amount of time to digitise everything while it was on a generous short-term loan from the owner. We digitised a thank you letter personally signed by King George V, appreciative of Corporal Harris’ service during WWI. Also note the original seal from Buckingham Palace. Here is series of postcards that feature Corporal Harris and were sent back to Australia during the War with messages scrawled on the back. We personally handled and cleaned each image before undertaking the digitising process with the highest level of care. Digital images are individually colour corrected and digitally spot-cleaned to bring them back to their...

How much does it cost to get my slides scanned?

How much does it cost to get my slides scanned?

Do you or your family have loads of old slides that you’d like scanned and digitised? Big Egg Media have been scanning slides and photos to digital JPG images in Adelaide for around eight years (since 2006), and one of the top questions our customers ask us is “How much does it cost to get my slides scanned?” Keep reading below to find out… Slide Scanning is Surprising Affordable The answer is generally straightforward, but can vary depending upon your individual requirements. For the stock-standard, general kodachrome 35mm slide, our normal price is $1.20 per slide. This gives you a high quality scan to JPG image at a resolution of 1200 DPI, which generates an image around 1000 x 1600 pixels. This is a great size for general printing and viewing on a TV or computer screen. Odd-sized or unusual format slides that require manual cropping may cost more, usually around $1.80 each. By the way, all our slide scanning services include a surface dust removal and clean, sharpening of...

Discover Advanced Photo Restoration & Scanning Techniques

Discover Advanced Photo Restoration & Scanning Techniques

Have you ever wondered what to do with your old photo albums or collection of slides and negatives? If the photos look old or damaged is it even worth trying to resurrect them? The answer is YES! It’s amazing what’s possible these days with modern scanning technology. While cheaper ‘consumer’ scanners are often an attractive option due to their lower price and apparent ease of use, they will only produce poor to average results, limited resolution and correction options, and ultimately won’t be doing your images justice. DO IT ONCE, DO IT RIGHT! On the other hand, higher end and professional image scanners give great results, allowing you to produce high quality, clear images and utilise the latest in scanning technology. Seeing old family memories come back to life and be preserved for future generations is definitely worth it. Below I will explain a few ways old slides, photos and negatives can be restored and some of the technology involved. Resolution and Quality: The quality of your scanner’s lens and image...

How to store your Slides and Negatives safely

How to store your Slides and Negatives safely

Many people have huge collections of slides, negatives and photos lying around the house or in the shed. Perhaps the most important thing you need to guard against is the degrading of these images, which can come in many forms, including: exposure to heat or cold becoming brittle, faded or stained becoming bent, ripped, cracked, warped or wrinkled being exposed to dust, dirt, moisture or insects To ensure your slides and negatives are kept in the best possible condition, they should be stored in sleeves or containers specially designed to keep your memories safe. Storage in a cool, dry location is best, so keep them out of any areas which may be exposed to Australia’s extreme temperatures. Older paper and plastic sleeves or enclosures may not be safe for long term storage, so replace them with modern, high quality plastic pocket-sleeves or plastic, metal or cardboard storage boxes. Also ensure each slide or negative is spaced accordingly and not bent or crammed in. Another, although generally impractical solution is...
